Discussion

Issue or Event since 1995 That Has Affected Tourism Demand

The sequence of terrorist attacks, which started on 11 September 2001 attacks on the United States, had a profound impact on the world tourism industry. In the past, tourists often fall victims of terrorism, but they have never been directly targeted by terrorists on such a massive scale (Glaesser, 2003). September 11 has not only modified and substantially affected industries or activities related to tourism and hospitality (by increasing the fear of using public transport), but has also largely disrupted global economy. September 11 created a state of panic and paranoia that led many researchers to link two issues which so far seemed disjointed, terrorism and pleasure or tourism (Hall, 2009).

The most spectacular and the most tragic attack on the World Trade Center on 11 September 2001, was not an attack directed at tourists. However, using civilian airliners as weapons, terrorists very effectively threaten tourists from traveling by plane. This in turn has had a very negative impact on the entire tourism industry, based largely on the aerospace industry, for the attack on the WTC was disastrous (Council of Europe, 2000).

Impact on U.S Tourist Market

The terrorist attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon led to many consequences for the American tourist market. Felt the effects of the attacks, most companies in this sector. The most affected were airlines, hotels, travel agencies, car rental agencies and all companies that sell goods and services to tourists (Glaesser, 2003).

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 affected the very wide coverage all over the world. According to the data published by the World Tourism Organization (called the United Nations World Tourism Organization, UNWTO), the number of tourist arrivals in the world declined from just 687 million in 2000 to 686.7 million in 2001. Quite different is the situation with regard to the American continent. Beginning in 2001 a steady decline in the number of foreign tourists visiting the two American continents, which is obviously associated with a reluctance of foreign tourists to travel to the United States after the September terrorist attacks. In 2000, the Region of the America's 128,100,000 tourists visited while in 2003 it was only 113.1 million visitors. Region North and South America is the only region in the world where the number of foreign tourists in 2004 was lower than in 2000 and ...
