Abstract

In many organizations, managerial decisions that take into account subordinates opinions have had to face certain troubles. Especially considering the inner workings and corporate culture of small organizations, teams of workers form alliances with their senior management which allows for unprofessional behavior. Not only this, in some cases both sides of the organization cover each other when unethical behavior is carried out, further taking the organization into the path of unprofessionalism. In this paper, I will be analyzing one such event that occurred in Empress Luxury Lines Coast Liners. The organization being small, its team members participated in unethical behavior which will be examined forthwith.

Introduction

Empress Luxury Lines is a pack of luxury coast liners that offer tours to the public during certain times of the year and have been quite successful as a resort coast liner. The ethical dilemma faced by Antonio originated with the thunder storm that struck leading to damage to the coast lines. Although the damages were repairable at a nominal cost, a lot of setbacks followed such as the September 11 attacks and people asking for refunds and so on. Once an assessment was made on the costs, some of the employees decided to devise a plot to raise more money through insurance, if they were to damage the remaining underground wires.

The Ethical Dilemma

This being an ethically wrongful act, Antonio Melendez got stuck in the dilemma of whether or not to report his peers for these acts or to keep quiet about them. Before having joined, Antonio was aware of the defrauding schemes and rumors about Empress Luxury Lines, as well as the upper management being aware of these defrauding acts and taking swift action against them. Since no whistle-blowers were recorded before Antonio joined, he figured it was acceptable to join the organization and hope for the best. There were no confidential mechanisms to protect the individuals who had done the defrauding business, which meant it would be easy to take action against them if anyone notified the upper management (Robbins, 2002).

Discussion

Organizational strategies

While there were several strategies Antonio could have utilized to deal with the dilemma of notifying upper management about wrongful practices from his peers, only some of these would fit the description of being ethically sound and possible. Using an individualism approach could work in Antonio's favor, if he were to witness the scheme and to report it without having incriminated himself. Antonio himself is an ethically strong person, and although he wants to keep his job, he is also highly aware of the illegality of the actions being carried out around him( Kolenda,1998).

Utilitarian Approach

Another strategy he could use is the Utilitarian approach, through which Antonio can decide how the majority of the organization can benefit from his actions, or at least render the least disastrous results in the case of Empress Luxury Lines (Brown,2011).
