Introduction

Antonio's Dilemma

Antonio is an employee at the Express Luxury Lines, an organization which operates in the cruise liner industry. In order to comprehend the complexity of the dilemma that Antonio faces the entire situation and business environment has to be critically analyzed. Antonio is aware that he is part of an organization, which operating in a recessionary period. And in these circumstances any organizational dilemmas can result in potentially catastrophic results for the organization. The company had invested heavily in increasing its number of cruise liners, corresponding to the stable and ample consumer demand in the industry before the recessionary period. However the global recession has caused the entire industry's returns to decrease drastically, and given the nature of the Sep 2011 terrorist attacks, the general vacationing trend has decreased drastically. Hence in the current situation the company finds itself in a business environment where the consumer demand is decreasing and the costs related to the maintenance of an excessively large fleet of cruise liners, is depleting the organizational profits.

In this scenario Antonio is aware that if any employee decides to cause an incident which negatively imparts the operations of the company, the management will be greatly offend, and the job prospect of the relevant employee will be threatened (Gaudine & Thorne, 2001).. In this scenario a business colleague is asking for Antonio's advice relating to a possible insurance fraud which is likely to be taken by the senior management of the company. Antonio's involvement in the incident is limited as a indirect stake holder who is not directly involved in the incident. He only has to help a fellow employee regarding his dilemma and the appropriate course of action. However the incident also provides a unique opportunity for Antonio. He can use this scenario to his advantage, and if things occur as planned; the organization would be able to invest in the system upgrade that he has been planning for since he joined the organization. Although Antonio can use the situation to his strategic advantage and become an opportunist in the given scenario, he also has to consider the legal and ethical ramifications of such actions. If he decides to instruct or suggest Kevin, to ignore the incident and not report to the insurance company regarding the insurance fraud, he may as well successfully attain the system upgrade that he has been vying for; however this will be an illegal and unethical activity. Such a decision will also place Kevin exposed to potential legal actions, as he did not report the illegal activity which was occurring in the company, if the relevant authorities got involved in the incident. Antonio has to critically analyze several variables and factors, before instructing Kevin regarding potential future alternatives, or even taking actions on his own.
