Writing is the primary ground on which your intellect and your learning are judged. It is very important to understand a subject and be able to express your learning through words. Within the context of ethical writing, plagiarism is one factor, which is widely, used and considered unethical.
In the Elizabethan era, plagiarism was not of much concern as the standards of writing have drastically institutionalized today. 'I think there was far more plagiarism in the last century. It was almost an accepted part of writing. The ethics of writing has changed. Nobody gets upset about whether Shakespeare plagiarized something. But I think the standards have to be pretty high now, particularly for non-fiction writers' (Jensen, 2002).
Academic Integrity and Plagiarism
The Office of Research Integrity (1994) says about plagiarism that it is, '[both] the theft and misrepresentation of intellectual property and the substantial unattributed textual copying of another's work'. Plagiarism in the academic sense only reflects the inability of the student to grasp the subject knowledge and inefficiency of writing in an ethical way. Copying and pasting texts from any literature or even paraphrasing the literature, without giving credit to the relevant source is mainly categorized under plagiarism.
Academic integrity is of high importance and the core value of any academia. To maintain this value plagiarism is strictly asked to avoid. In many universities and educational institutions, any person convicted of plagiarism is liable to undergo legal processes and outlawed from the institution.
The Need to Plagiarize
The need and ideas that lead to plagiarize is learned in the early ages as the students are unable to depict their ideas clearly through their own words (Jensen, 2002). Students need to plagiarize in any of the condition; either they are unable to find the right words to express their knowledge or they are too lazy and running short on time to complete their given task in their own words. Plagiarism highly effects the presentation of your lack competency to write and makes it viable to be considered as an unethical approach of writing.
Students at times face the difficulty in citing references and sources from the internet and fall for plagiarism. Their incompetent searching skills and comprehension skills also play a part in the need to plagiarize. Many students at times get confused to understand the difference between plagiarizing and paraphrasing which leads to writing down a content that is counted under plagiarism.
Intentional Plagiarism Vs Unintentional Plagiarism
The intentional or deliberate plagiarism is when the person represents other's ideas and opinions with the view that it is his own content. This accounts for an act of stealing other person's information; most of the time in case of copy pasting the content. Every institution has its predefined limit of quoting texts from any source. A commonly observed limit of plagiarism is 10% in many reputable academic institutions.
The unintentional plagiarism mostly occurs when a person carelessly cites sources or paraphrases and ends up giving misleading credit to any source of information. This kind of plagiarism is categorized under improper citation ...
