There is a strong need to avoid and fight plagiarism because it is equivalent to cheating and because it denies us the critical process of thinking. Such an attitude slows the progress of learning knowledge and amounts to denying the essence of university work. It also immoral and usually invites strict action against the student who have been found guilty of committing this act. With the easy access to information on the Internet, giving ideas of others as our own without acknowledging the original author of them is a common phenomenon nowadays.
Plagiarism is incurred when using other people's ideas and not adequately recognizing the source information. Since the internet is loaded with tremendous amount of information with thousands of resources, it becomes feasible for any student to copy ideas, words or concepts of other writers and use it as their own. To thoroughly grasp an understanding of this topic, it would be better to first understand what plagiarism is and how it is committed. It also needs to be examined how plagiarism can be avoided.

What is Plagiarism
Plagiarism or academic dishonesty refers to applying knowledge, work, words, ideas or concepts of other writers and using it as one's own work. This is applicable to any class work, test, software, photography, etc. It is a serious offense and is considered academic honesty and intellectual theft because plagiarized work uses the intellectual skills of another person as its own. The different types of plagiarism include intentional plagiarism and unintentional plagiarism which is the ignorance of what is plagiarism.
