Naskh and Bada application in Quran

Introduction

Holy Quran is the last book of God that was revealed on the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him). The Muslims, therefore, are required to understand and read the Quran in depth. Quranic Science as a subject provides knowledge about the Quran in different languages and in the context of different societies. This provides strong evidence that the Muslims have studied Quran, and a number of Islamic scholars have written many books providing the translation and explaining the teachings of Holy Quran (Shah, n.d.)

This assignment as is from the field of Quranic sciences, it will focus on two important concepts: Naskh and Bada. An analysis is provided regarding how these concepts are applied to Quran. In order to under the concept, the definitions of the terms, their classification and in case of Naskh, its presence in Quran are also included.

Naskh_ Application in Quran

The literal meaning of the term Naskh is the wind that destroyed the footprint. According to some other sources, it also means the transference or the transcription of something from one position to another while keeping the essence of that something constant. The application of the concept of Naskh is provided by many Arabic expressions that have the literal meanings of re-creation and the inheritance transfer from individuals to individuals. The Ulema and the Islamic scholars hold different views regarding the meaning of Naskh as which term could serve as better and clear. Naskh meaning could be regarded as a homonym. However, the great numbers of scholars hold a view that obliteration is the primary meaning of the term. As far as the secondary meaning is concerned, transcription/transference could serve the best

In the light of the above discussed literary meanings, Naskh is defined in the following words

“The suspension of one Shariah ruling by the other one on the ground that the later one is the subsequent origin and that the two kinds of the ruling are different from each other” (Kamali, 2005)

This definition brings to light the point that Naskh is one that follows and operates in accordance with the rules of Shariah only. This condition prevents the application of Naskh concept to the rules that are biased and have their origin from rationality alone.

Naskh is the most relevant notion that is surrounding the rulings of Holy Quran (Saeed, 2006, pp.77). The requirement for the operating of two rulings is kept separate so as to enact each ruling in a separate text. It is because when both the rulings occur in a similar text, the probability exists that one may compliment the other one, or that one may impose a condition on the other ruling.
