Introduction

The paper discusses about the translation of Holy Quran by Abdullah Yusuf Ali. Quran is the scripture of Islam, which is according to the faith of Muslims, the literal revelation of Allah to the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be upon Him), mediated through the angel Gabriel. It is the oldest preserved Arabic prose.

Abdullah Yusuf Ali is renowned for his contribution in the translation of Quran in English language. He was a Muslim scholar who lived in India. He was master in English Literature and had equal expertise in Arabic language, not only speaking, but also in writing. He was Hifz-e-Quran and had learnt Quran by heart. He was student of European universities these university includes University of Leeds. He was interested in Quran history and review several commentaries of Quran with lengthy explanation. Yusuf Ali has done translation of Quran in English and also completes commentary.

Discussion

Yusuf Ali had translated Quran in English and provided commentary that has significant explanation of why the verse or chapter was revealed by Allah. He took around four years to complete the translation and commentary. He started his work from 1934-1938. In 20th century till now the conversion rate of Muslims has increased significantly, for that reason Yusuf Ali started translating Quran in English. However, the translation was done before him in 1917, by Ahmadi Maulana Muhammad Ali, but there were changes in the translation according to the Ahmedi practice that was not accepted. Yusuf's translation is highly accepted and according to the actual Arabic Quran. The translation went to 30 different publishing houses and it become popular in the English speaking Muslims. After him also there were several translations that were approved, but it is the most authenticate among the English Muslims.
