Accommodations and Modification of Lesson Plan

Description of the Targeted Student

The student I observed is a nine year old boy in the third grade and has a disability as he is emotional disturbed. He does not sit still in class, is continuously fighting with fellow students, but at times can be sweet and kind to others. He is bright and intelligent student but he has difficulties in understanding the written words and lacks the ability to fluently read the text. I observed that he is very active in sports. He enthusiastically takes part in sports competitions and has even won in a race. He loves horses as well; he takes horse riding lessons after school. He is very happy and is often seen in high spirits during any outdoor activity. He is energetic and friendly when he is involved in an outside activity. Usually he disturbs his fellow students and fights with them on the ground but eventually he gets engrossed in his game and behaves like a normal student. When he is playing he abides by the rules of the game and gets angry if some other student does not follow the rules and guidelines of the game.

He is smart and motivated enough to learn to read but he has now realized that he is falling behind in the class which results in him misbehaving and disturbing the class. It has been observed that the student has also developed attention deficiency after he has realized that he is falling behind his class mates. The disability is due to the fact that his parents have recently divorced which has left him emotionally disturbed. My targeted student has mild SLD, he requires few accommodations and should be given closer attention in the regular classroom. He can easily be taught with the regular students through using certain strategies and a little modification in the lesson plan.

Learning Activities Designed for the Student

My selected student is being taught the words through tiny sound segments. The sounds are made through clapping in sequence with the word sound. He is encouraged to clap along with the teacher while the word is pronounced slowly in unison. This has been done till he becomes familiarized with the words and their sounds. As he gradually becomes familiar with the basic words, some difficult words are also being included in his lessons. He is also given colorful picture story books with few phrases telling the story. He loves looking at the colorful pictures and eagerly tries to read the words in the book. Apart from the class lessons, the test papers are designed a little different for him then the rest of the class. In his tests the instructions are more easily written and he is given easy words so that he can effortlessly comprehend what is written in the paper and is able to solve it with ease. He is also given more time to finish up his paper.

As for his class disruption and fighting ...
