Abstract

When a person's life, job or sanity is threatened by another individual or he / she has been place in a situation where either their careers or their life is in jeopardy, it is known as the workplace violence. There are different types of workplace violence in which the victim is the employee of the organization and may be targeted either for work related reasons or on the domestic grounds. In either of the cases there are serious implications on the Human Resource Management of the Company. The HR of any organization is responsible for the sanity and safety of its people. The role of an HR professional is to provide a healthy environment for the functioning of the employees, take measures to avoid any sort of violence and ensure safety of its people. If any kind of violence occurs within the walls of the organization, it has serious implications on the HR of the company and its presence as the employee representative. All over the world companies take serious notice of violence's that occur in the workplace.

Work Place Violence

Introduction

The term Workplace violence is use to define the incidents or instances where the individuals are threatened, abused or assaulted in situations that are work relating which threatens their well being, safety or health. Any such incident that puts a persons well being in jeopardy and threatens his or her existence would be considered as an act of violence. This may include the violence which is a product of dispute between the workers in any organization, industrial dispute by or against unions; however, this is not a major factor contributing to the workplace violence.

Violence is actually defined as behavior form which has the potential to create problems or harm anyone. Violence can either be physical violence, non-physical violence or aggravated physical violence which signifies the use of weapons like knife, gun etc. No matter what form of violence it is, it will always be a concern for employees and management. From the perspective of employees it causes employees to have lower morale and a negative image of the organization; which as a result makes it difficult for the employer to hire and retain staff similarly it costs company extra amounts that occurs because of absenteeism, insurance, fees given for legal proceedings, compensation payments in case of negligence (Baron, 1993).

Discussion

It is a traumatic situation for employees and causes stress, pain and in some severe cases death or physical disability. Physical violence or attacks are serious threats to a person's wellbeing, similarly a persistent verbal abuse, threats and mental torture also causes serious trauma and have negative implications on the health of the employee because of stress and anxiety. Gossip in the workplace is also a form of violence and has been condemned globally. It is generally stated as a kind of attack on any individual (Kirk et.al, 2003).
