The Voices of Freedom

In the third edition of his book Voices of Freedom, Eric Forner offers his readers a wide range of opinions of noted historical figures on their concept of freedom. The best part is the fact that the book also includes comments of an ordinary American on freedom.

There is a room where six noted American freedom fighters, that appeared in the book, will sit and discuss their idea of American freedom. Time has been suspended in the room. Today will be a historical day in that all prominent men will gather and have an enlightening discussion. They come from different time periods, different backgrounds and certainly differing ideologies.

Introduction on the six characters from the book

Chief Joseph is a Native American and is the leader of the Indian tribe Nez Perce. Back in the days of Gold rush, he tries in vain to solve the issues between the white settlers and Native Americans. The Native Americans at the time were discriminated and ill treated. Chief Joseph was born in Wallowa Valley in the year 1840. His surrender speech and appeal to the Hayes administration are most famous.

Milton Friedman is an American economist. He too joins in the conversation to discuss his idea of freedom with the rest of the participants in the room. He was born in Brooklyn, New York in the year 1912. He too has the Presidential Medal of Freedom to his honor. He will discuss his idea of economic freedom.

Jimmy Carter is the 39th president of the United States of America. He was born in Georgia in the year 1924. He is the winner of Nobel Peace Prize and Presidential Medal of Freedom. He also won National Civil Rights Museum Freedom Award in the year 1994.

Anthony Kennedy is the Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. He was the son of the affluent Anthony J. Kennedy and was born in the year 1936 in Sacramento, California. In this room, he will discuss his off the bench struggle for freedom.

The room has invited another United State's president. George W. Bush is the 41st president of the United States of America. He was born in the year 1946, in Connecticut.

Lyndon B. Johnson is the 36th president of Unites States of America. He is well known for his statement Freedom is not enough (Foner, p. 121). In the year 1980, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He is also famous in the context of the Freedom Summer.
