Childhood Development

Childhood development is one of the most important topics and there exist a large number of researches on this particular topic. This paper presents an analysis of childhood and adolescent development, with a critical discussion on cognitive, psychological, and biological aspects of development. In this paper the characteristics of a normal child, who experiences a normal growth are considered (Brazelton, 2006).

The dynamic and continuous process of child growth and development has been inextricably linked to changes in body composition that guide general physical characteristics of each period of childhood. Furthermore, estimates of body composition are important in the initial evaluation and monitoring of patients with acute and chronic malnutrition from any cause (Brazelton, 2006).

Cognitive Development (from birth to 3 months)

Sensorimotor stage

This stage takes place between birth and age two, as children begin to understand the information his senses and his ability to interact with the world. During this stage, children learn to manipulate objects, but cannot understand the permanence of these objects if they are within the range of an individual's senses. That is, once an object disappears from view of the child cannot understand that there is still the object (or person). For this reason they find it so compelling and surprising game that many adults play with their children, consistent in hiding his face behind an object such as a cushion, and then return to "appear." (Brazelton, 2006).

Physical development ( 0 to 3 months)

The child in this age moves their bodies only when they are awake, but they do not know yet how they would be able to move the specific part of their bodies (hands, legs ect). In the first eight weeks, the new born has no control on their movements and all of their physical activities is reflexive and un-volunteer in nature. In the third month, they learn to lift their heads when lying on their stomach and move their legs as well.

Language development (0 to 3 months)

At the age, a child communicates by crying and one can understand what they want by observing the way they cry. Their cry means different things in different times, for instances sometimes they will cry out of hunger, pain, cold, loneliness and fear.

Emotional development (0 to 3 months)

The child at this age has no consciousness of his own to response with the sense of purpose. Their responses will depend upon what they are feeling at the moment. For example if they feel happy they will laugh and if they feel afraid than they will cry out laud.

Psychological Development (0 to 3 months)

Babies at this stage cannot think but can only feel therefore they will pick up the feeling of the people who are in their surroundings and change their moods with respect to the moods of the people around them.

Physical development (3 to 6 months)

At this stage, the motor skills of the baby develop even more. They are able to coordinate their hand and legs movement and are ...
