Environment and Public Works Committee

Identification of the Committee The committee on Environment and Public Works is chaired by Ms. Barbara Levy from California and Mr. James Inhofe from Oklahoma. The senate created the committee in 1937 to manage the federal building development. The committee was renamed by the panel on public works in 1947. In 1977, the name was changed again as Environment and Public Works Committee. The committee has the responsibilities to create new laws for controlling air and water pollution, economic development of rural communities, and natural disaster relief. The jurisdiction has assigned the committee to save endangered species, wildlife, and for regulating nuclear power. The committee activities include: restoring the legislation of landmark everglades, protecting the water resources, reviewing advance technologies, recycling material, climatic changes etc. The committee has seven sub-committees known as the environmental responsibilities and health of children, nuclear safety and clean air, the new economy and green jobs, health of environment and safety from toxic material, infrastructure development, and safety of the endangered species. Purpose and Responsibilities

The purpose of the committee on Environment and Public Works is to resolve the environmental and infrastructure issues. The committee is responsible for all the messages, appeals, projected legislation, and all matters on different subjects. These subjects are related to controlling air pollution, improving infrastructure, protecting environmental pollution, relief programs for natural disaster, protecting wildlife and endangered species. The other areas are noise pollution, dumping of ocean, nuclear energy protection, regional economic development, recycling, controlling water pollution, and resource protection. (Summers, 14)
