Therefore, the System Development Life cycle has helped in updating the obsolete EMR systems and introducing the new systems. There are a various distinct models within SDLC, all of which are implemented with same basic phases however with only a few minor additional or different stages.

Stage 1: Assessing System's Needs

The participation by the nurses is vital in identifying the requirements that the HIT system must fulfill. The opinions of the nurses therefore must be considered while taking steps regarding catering various aspects of patient care. The team of nurses can help answer a number of troubling questions that includes the system's cost; speed, accuracy and security provided by the system; training of the staff and so forth. The input by the nurses will help identify the extent of flexibility the new SDLC system offer and what essential requirements it must address.

Stage 2: System Analysis This step includes voicing the nurses while assessing the system's specifications. The nurses will have important data that can be utilized in analyzing the impact of HIT on the current workflow and how it can be improved. The effectiveness of the outcomes of this step will be unsatisfactory for the nurses if their perspective is not included which will in turn affect the efficiency and usefulness of patient care.
