The considerations of the “social responsibilities of business” are prominent for their analytical looseness and need of rigor. What does it signify to state that “business” has responsibilities? Only persons can have responsibilities. A company is an artificial individual and in this sense may have artificial responsibilities, but “business” as an entire will not be said to have responsibilities, even in this vague sense. The first step in the direction of clarity in analyzing the doctrine of the communal blame of enterprise is to inquire accurately what it suggests for whom.
