How does Print Media Portray to the General Public the Gypsy and Traveller Communities in England?

Abstract

This research proposal aims to throw light on the issue of Traveller and Gypsy communities in England. Moreover, this paper also explains the attitude of print media towards these communities and provides an analysis on the racist behaviour of the English print media and its consequences and effects on Gypsies and Traveller communities.

Summary

Although Travellers and Gypsies are not a huge crowd in England but their treatment in the media is horrendous. A measure of the genuine ability of English print media to reveal the fact that they are a multiracial society is its handling of Gypsies and Travellers. The use of prejudicial images, racist language and stereotyped reporting of Gypsies and Travellers supports the principle of chauvinism and so provides to those members of the community who it may influence the proposal that racist approach to others are an rational and acceptable approach, the print media continues to survive within a authoritarian framework which does not permit general protests of racial crime. The Press Complaints Commission manages a code of practice which makes orientation to racial offence but only regards as complaints to be within its extent when the nasty and unpleasant words are used in association to a recognized individual who then themselves protest.

In actual fact this means that the PCC never supports any complaints on the basis of racial crime. What has turn out to be a common practice for advertising and broadcasting is still measured beyond the pale for the print media. In addition to this, over reporting is normally employed with the arrival of Gypsies in local towns, and with the arrivals of refugees from other countries. When the refugees are Gypsies, the consequence appears to be twice. This sort of reporting is so widespread now that the print media and their readers have even lost an unsubstantiated hold on the denotation of the words they use.
