Introduction

Small talks include upcoming activities of people on weekend, TV shows, weather, or any prospective social meetings or gatherings. Most of the dictionaries have defined small talks as insignificant since the speaking discourse covers a wide range of topics. According to the Collins Advances Learner's English Dictionary and Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, for instance 'small talk' as a polite conversation bout ordinary or unimportant subjects that people make at social occasions. Schneider (1988) has reviewed and analyzed the small talk's definition in more than thirty dictionaries including American and British. He found that small talks are generally associated and connoted as insignificant, unimportant, trivial and the like. Organisation is a good example to illustrate further the role of small talks since at workplace people with diverse backgrounds, experiences; demographics are involved achieving the same common goal. There the chances for the conflict of interest due to the trivial nature and the task oriented small talks. Yet, small talks are important not only at the workplace but every other occasion and hence occur mostly at the workplace despite whatsoever the conflicts are among employees.

It is necessary and normal to have a small talk in particular situations especially in the English speaking countries including United States and United Kingdom in order to break the ice. Since, people most of the people feel awkward when there is a pause of silence between two, hence small talks are there to break the ice and fills the gap with it. Moreover, using a second language people do feel shy, yet saying nothing is also considered as rude sometimes (Mitchison, 1973). Usually there are certain times when people used to have a small talk; similarly particular topics remain as the basis of this small talk. This small talk is more appropriate for the people with many different relationships. Anyonymous type of persons-who do not know each other at all use to have small talk in order to start the conversation. Certain safe topics are there to let the people start the small talk such as weather today is too hot, or it seems that it would be raining later on in the night and likewise.

Current events are another way of engaging in particular topics for safe small talks. To discuss news is generally considered as the safe, until and unless people are not discussing any particular controversial and conflicting topic in their small talks. Sports including weather are the other way to start the small talk; this is a very common topic among people involved in small talks. Sports small usually starts with if for instance any good player is not playing in the major event or vice versa, or the performance of a particular player is discussed. Another good topic includes the celebrity gossips, i.e. discussing the entertainment news.
