Introduction to RFID Technology

Current age is the age of modern inventions, and these inventions are very useful for us. Radio frequency identification is one the latest inventions. This technology is very helpful in the application and handling of manufacturing goods and materials. The cause behind its popularity is that, it works without the requirement of line of sight. RFID tags sustain a larger set of limited IDs than bar codes, and can incorporate extra data such as merchandise type, manufacturer, and even compute ecological aspect for instance temperature. Human support does not require in the operation of RFID. This technology takes so much time to be on the main stream, to be part of the organizational system or business scenario because of the cost concern.

RFID Working Principle

Active RFID

Active tags are normally battery operated tags. The life time of the tag is limited because of the use of batteries. For example the tags attached with the luggage of the aircraft recognize by the RFID receiver and it sends the require information about the luggage to the network at the airport. The use of batteries in active tags makes it non practical device for use in business (Want, R. 2006).

Passive RFID

In this type of RFID's, there is no need of batteries or maintenance. The life of tag becomes increase and it useful for retail trade and easily applicable by means of adhesives. It consists of three parts, a semiconductor chip which is attached with the antenna, an antenna, and some type of encapsulation as a body. The reader of the tag is responsible for communicating and providing the power source (Weinstein, 2005). The antenna present on the device sends the information to the receiver. The plastic cover protects the chip and antenna from the rough ecological conditions. The plastic cover is made up of laminar artificial plastic which is protecting cover the antenna.
