Introduction

Human respiratory system is most vital system. It includes lungs, respiratory muscle and airways. Humans inhale oxygen from the environment and exhale carbon dioxide. Alveolar region of the lung is responsible for this exchange. Respiratory system ensures the unhindered supply of oxygen to every part of the body. This respiratory system is exposed to different diseases. Respiratory disorder is a medical term which includes all disorders of respiration in higher organisms. Which are all lung disease and disorders like asthma, pneumonia, tuberculosis and lung cancer. Due to air borne pathogens human respiratory system is exposed to respiratory disorders. Respiratory disorder ranges from self limited and mild like common cold to life threatening disease like lung cancer and pulmonary embolism. Pulmonology is a branch of medicine where respiratory disorders are studied.

Major respiratory disorders

Respiratory disorders can be categorized in different ways. Some classify them according to the tissues and organs involved. Some differentiate them according to symptoms and associated patterns. Major classification includes Inflammatory Lung Disorders, Obstructive Lung Disease and Chronic Lung Diseases. Asthma, Emphysema, Bronchitis, Pneumonia and Cystic Fibrosis are major respiratory disorders.

Asthma

It is a common chronic inflammatory disorder. Its symptoms include coughing, sneezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. Asthma affects the airways that carry air to and away from lungs. People suffering from this long lasting condition are known as asthmatic. In this conditions, the inside walls of asthmatic's lungs are inflamed, which causes narrower inflow and outflow of air from lungs. In some extreme cases of asthma, the blockage of airways prevents the inflow of oxygen into lungs. Oxygen does not reach the vital organs of the body, which can produce fatal results.
