RESPIRATORY DISTRESS SYNDROME

Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), is also called respiratory distress syndrome in infants (IRDS) or neonatal respiratory distress syndrome. It is a disorder among newborn infants, whose lungs are not fully mature. The lower the gestational age, the more likely the children would be going to suffer from the disease.

The SDR is the most common respiratory disorder in preterm infants. The prenatal care with steroids to accelerate lung maturation and development of exogenous surfactant may be the reason for the marked improvement in the outcomes of patients with RDS. Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is the most common respiratory and circulatory disorder occurring in infants born prematurely. This disorder is most dangerous for the baby. It results from insufficient self-contained breathing lung maturity, immaturity of cardiovascular deficiency of surfactant, decreasing the surface tension of the alveoli. Respiratory and circulatory failure is visible at the first breath prematurely. In the absence of oxygen, it can lead to acute respiratory failure.

Symptoms of Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Premature babies born before 25th weeks of gestation suffer from respiratory distress syndrome in 90% cases, which practically does not occur in children born after 36 week of pregnancy. Other factors that increase the risk of the disorder is diabetes in the mother, hypoxia and birth by Caesarean section. Respiratory distress syndrome primarily means that the baby's lungs are insufficiently developed. Alveoli in patients with children began to expand, which means that there is disease among the children.

A child who is born with RDS struggles with its first breath outside the womb. Symptoms become more severe as respiratory failure occur between the first and second day of life. In the absence of action to support the child's breathing, blood oxygen saturation over time is getting lower, resulting in hypoxia and ...
