The opening sentence describes itself in opposition to the attitude of the Duke to his wife: he relates his wife to painting on the wall, and goes further in his reduction of it to a simple object, speaking of "my last Duchess, "as a previous acquisition that is about to put back. Vagueness is not lifted, but strengthens by the following sentence of poem. "My Last Duchess is termed a "theatrical monologue" for the reason that it involves three recognized features: an instance, a narrator, and a hearer. The influence or qualities in the verse "My Last Duchess", allows the rhymester to create two kinds of rhyme, the lyric and the performance. It discusses concerning and portrays a female, but never in point of fact quotes that lady.

The Duke explains here what he cannot stand in the countenance of his wife: that all who is led to contemplate the portrait cannot help but to want to ask a question, "if the 'dared': is not that the sight of a lover who alone can cause the Duchess such a look? The merits of this issue is, it seems, confirmed by the mention by the Duke of "this slight pinking dying at the bottom of his throat," or even "this burst of joy on the cheek of Duchess. " The English word, spot also put forwards that this redness, more or less sexual, which macula face and throat of his wife, is seen by the Duke as a stain, an offend to his admiration.

The Duke here sums up the objections that led him to assassinate the Duchess: her smile, it provides to all, and it shows gratitude to each are seen as signs that destroy what makes her pride - and his superiority over his wife - his lineage 900 years old. As stated by Robert Browning, the Duchess lack of skill that the push to flatter her husband, and did not realize the contempt he feels.
