A significant portion of criminal justice research is based upon collecting a subset of data on some cases or individuals and making educated guesses about the larger set (Twining, 2006). The mathematics used to do this are referred to as inferential mathematics. Inferential mathematics are at the center of scientific research, allowing researchers to develop explanations and make predictions (Tillers, 2007). Without inferential mathematics, we would only be able to summarize the information collected, and not make educated guesses about information that we were not able to collect (Twining, 2006).
