Introduction

McDonald's is considered to be much more than ordinary food chains when it comes to the fast food business. However, this was not the case before and McDonald's had to struggle through it to make it the famous chain that it is today. Now, this fast food chain is known as a cultural mirror (Arndt, 2007). Numerous changes have taken place at the burger company and they all reflect that the eating habits of Americans have evolved with the passage of times and with the advancement in lifestyles. As the world continues to move towards globalization, people are having less time for themselves and thus they prefer to go for fast food while being on the go and prefer to have fast food instead of cooking food at their homes.

Planning

Planning is an important component of the management functions and the success of McDonald's is attributed to the careful planning which the managers did in order to make the fast food chain stand out among others and make it successful in the presence of other dominant brands. In the year 2003, McDonald's introduced McMuffin and McGriddle which was a pork patty between the two pancakes which were syrup-infused (Arndt, 2007). These new offerings instantly became icons and started to dominate the mornings of the customers allowing McDonald's to own about a quarter of the whooping $25 billion market which prefers to have fast food in breakfast. Morning meals play an integral role in the working of McDonald's in the United States, and accounts for almost half of the company's profits and for a quarter of its domestic revenues (Arndt, 2007).
