Introduction

Much has been written and said about management and leadership. We all know leadership and management both plays highly significant role attaining the vision and objectives of the organization (Bennis , 1989). However, we often get confused between the both terms. In this paper, we are going to discuss is leadership is management or they are different that compliments the each other's role. In this essay seeks to answer this question, for which analyze different sources of it. This question is formulated because many executives fail to capture the difference between the two and therefore suffer due to a lack of understanding on how to carry out their duties within the organization. The purpose of this paper is to let leaders know whether management and leadership are same approaches or different.

Discussion

People often get confused between leadership and management. Research stated that leadership and management are both different skills. Mostly we expect corporative executives to get organizational objectives achieved with their detail oriented approaches to management and then at the same time suddenly we expect them to metamorphose into visionary leaders immediately on their promotion to higher level. According to Annmarie Neal (ASTD Press, 2013), it actually does not work. She said that she has found best leaders that were not at all good managers. They understood discipline but were not good accountants or effective, best brand manager, or best technical individual (Clark, 2013).

John Kotter In an interview with BBC said that he has been studying business for more than four decades and has been consulting to organizations on the ways to implement new strategies. in all his career he has heard people using the words management and leadership synonymously which every time drives him crazy people after so many studies and researchers still people have confusion around these two terms which is highly massive. According to him, the mistakes people make on the issue are threefold (Kotter, 2013):

Individuals use the terms Management and Leadership interchangeably. That means that they do not see crucial difference between these two terms and significant function and roles played by them.

Many individuals think that people at higher level of the hierarchies are leaders. Then people below in layer are called as management. Then rest all the individuals, workers, and specialists are termed as contributors which is a very misleading mistake. Individuals often think leadership in terms of personality characteristics frequently also called as charisma. Since very small number of people has great charisma, which means that leadership can be provided by few people that get us into growing trouble.

Actually management is set of well know processes like measuring performance, budgeting, staffing jobs, planning, problem solving and structuring jobs which help organizations to attain its goals and objectives. Management helps organizations to produce products and services as it promises on budget, of consistent quality, week after week and day after day.
