Up until the twentieth century, human resources had a minimal presence in Higher Education (Webb & Norton, 2009). Since then institutions of higher education have started to initiate practices similar to those in the industry and business. Personnel management has continued to develop. The importance of human resources started being recognized by institutions of higher education, and administrators started focusing on its functions. This chapter of review literature will outline the literature that is important to understanding and interpreting the results of this study (Bovee and Thill, 2005). Each segment will summarize the major findings of this research. This review of the literature is intended to explain the reader with basic expectations about problem solving which went into the design of this research and the analysis of the results.
Importance of HR for an Educational Organization
Human Resource Management is the most important and integral part of any organization. The way a HR department runs, deeply affects the whole organization. A hefty part of an organization's growth depends on the Human Resource department as they are responsible for recruiting the people who are suitable for the job (Buckley, Minette, Joy & Michaels, 2004). An organization needs talented and skilled people to drive their company towards success, and for that, the organization needs a capable and talented HR team. If a company has a flexible, highly skilled and strong management and workforce then it will surely be successful. With a growing focus on the importance of 'knowledge societies' for equipping countries with a suitable workforce, issues around human resources within the education sector have come under greater scrutiny (Early, 2006). The human resource element has two important dimensions: education supplies human resources, but equally it is essential that those responsible for education receive high quality training and opportunities in order to fulfill their role. The human resource management (HRM) is a set of practices of management aimed at mobilizing and developing human resources for greater performance of the organization. This holds true for the education sector as well.
