ABSTRACT
Since the middle of last century, in the commercial airline transport world, the average accident rate maintains high, with 3 per million departures. Today, as the civil aviation is expanded extensively; meanwhile, the amount of accidents of aircraft enhances. In the modern aviation industry, the more expensive aircraft can carry greater amount of passengers, hence, the accidents has contribute to greater hazards. In the world's aviation industry, the airline, the manufacturer and the legislative authority have intended to ensure the flight safety by various methods.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Introduction
Sri Lankan Airlines (Formally Air Lanka) was founded in the year 1979 and commenced operations on 01 September 1979. Initially it was under a management agreement with Singapore Airlines and the seconded staff from Singapore Airlines held many key positions. Training & Development function was entirely handled by Singapore Airlines. Subsequently it was initiated small training units in different operational areas such as In-flight Services Department for Cabin Crew Training, Engineering & Maintenance Department for Technical Training Ground Handling Department for Ground Handling (Airport Services) Training etc.
This got further developed at a later stage and three main training areas were formed. Out of this Ground Services Training unit developed to be the Air Lanka Centre for Training as the main training unit of the organizations. This unit handled all types of training excluding Technical Training for Engineering & Maintenance Staff, Cabin Crew Training in the Service Procedures and Safety and Security and Investigation Training.
Accordingly Air Lanka Centre for Training became the Unit to handle all other training and was centrally established as the organizations HR Development Centre. In the year 1998 Air Lanka went in to an agreement with Emirates accordingly they bought 40% of the airline and management control for a period of 10 years. At this juncture organization was renamed as Sri Lankan Airlines.
During the following ten year period a very significant development took place in the area of Training & Development as a result Air Lanka Centre for Training - ACT became International Aviation Academy - IAA.
