Introduction

Human Resource Management is an important function of an organization that provides support and assistance to the primary business operations. In the last two decades, HR has been explored as a significant side line function of an organization that has an integral role to play in the effectiveness of corporate decisions. It has revealed human capital as a precious physical and intellectual asset of an organization that could help it to achieve a competitive advantage in the industry.

This essay is aimed at highlighting the importance of human resource in the corporate world and how it might help human capital to become a source of earning a competitive advantage to an organization. An organization operating in the UK market has been selected to understand the implication of HR policies and practices. It also strives to highlight the major role played by the HR policies and practices of the selected organization to maintain its position and competitive advantage in the UK industry.

An effort is made to highlight the strategic importance of HR practices and policies that could be critical to an overall performance of the organization. Finally, a conclusion is drawn based on the established understanding of the subject matter in relation to the selected organization.

Discussion

The way an HR department runs, deeply affects the whole organization. A hefty part of an organization's growth depends on the effectiveness of policies and practices that have been incorporated by the Human Resource department. They are also responsible for recruiting right people for the right job. An organization needs talented and skilled people to drive their company towards success, and for that, the organization needs a capable and talented HR team (Gomez -Mejia et. al., 2010, p. 53).

The human resource management is a set of practices of management aimed at mobilizing and developing human resource for greater performance of the organization (Noe et. al., 2011, p. 2). In economies like the UK where heavy trend towards service based industry can be observed, HR policies and practices play a significant role in creating effective performance (Bized, 2004, p. n.d.). An organization needs to deal with different conflicts regularly. The HRM needs to provide effective solutions to avoid serious issues. The HRM plans and manages the entire process, for which they need different strategies and techniques (Werner & DeSimone, 2011, p. 89).

Tesco is involved in grocery and general merchandising retailing. It has been considered as the third largest retailer in the world in terms of revenue. First store of Tesco started its operations in 1929.
