Health Care Leadership Competencies in Organization

Introduction

Competency plays a vital and core role in leadership proficiency. It manages health care environment and facilitates in providing a positive contribution towards building a better environment. A leader supports his team by empowering them through an encouraging support. It has become a priority in health care services to develop clinical nurse leaders to provide more patient centered practice. The nursing leader helps in the improvement of the health care environment by providing proactive support and encouragement to the nurse practitioner under it.

Despite of effective approaches implemented to enhance the leadership quality and quality of care provided to the patients, the attitude towards nursing quality remains low. This is because the senior nurses in the health care are either diploma holders or associated degree programs that lack the matter related to leadership, management and organization needed to execute the role of an efficient leader. To become an effective leader it is important to utilize the skills and knowledge to achieve quality improved services in the health care.

Discussion

Professional Competency is divided into two major sections; knowledge and skills. It is important to use the skill and knowledge one has to achieve effective and manageable leadership in the organization by the nurses. According to the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health care Organization (JCAHO) competency is defined as the ability skills and knowledge possessed by a person to produce better performance in its field (Whelan, 2006, p.198). The competency process is a team effort and a collaborating participation of the nursing leaders that include the trainer, manager and preceptor and the staff members to ensure high excellence workforce. It is a process of the initial development and maintenance of knowledge and skills (Whelan, 2006, p.199).

The competency level from the beginning phase till the leadership phase undergoes many primary changes. These changes not only influences the health care services provided to the patients but also impacts the self ability of the nurses. The nurse in the light of significant knowledge, skills that they through observing and ability to utilize their skill on works are the three signs of competency in the services provided. The mentor is the source that provides the medium for other nurses in the team to adapt knowledge and skills of the leading nurse (Grossman, 2007. p.58).
