Background of the Study
The term cultural competence can be define as a process of becoming aware of personal cultural influences. Cultural competencies seek to develop sound knowledge through collecting relevant cultural data. It directly encounters with the individuals the culturally diverse backgrounds (Lipson and DeSantis 2007). There is a need for the healthcare provider to be culturally competent as it is one of the major concerns of nursing practice, education and science. The healthcare system of United States requires the cultural competencies of healthcare provider as it is critical to achieve a high quality healthcare. The quality of provided healthcare services can be affected by the lack of workforce diversity and cultural competencies.
Problem Statement
Ideally the impact of the Nurse Leaders should be substantive on the development of strong organizational diversity and inclusion practices as they relate to cultural competence within a health care organization; however, this is not the case in many facilities. The eradication of health care disparities in this country must involve a comprehensive review of how our leaders lead and the cultural competence of our leaders as this will directly influence the workforce under their direction, the patients and families under their care. Gaps in the literature indicate that further exploration of this facet of the health care workforce is needed.
Purpose of the Study
The main focus of this particular research study is to examine the leadership styles and cultural competence of nurse leaders in North Carolina.
