Leadership is not merely a series of skills or task; rather, it is an attitude that informs behaviour (Cook, 2001, p. 38). Each individual will have the opportunity to lead. If the individual has the desire and willpower, they can become an effective leader. Leaders go through a process of continuous change, self study, education, training and experience. The ability to influence a group towards the achievement of a vision or a set of goals is a leader.
There are various roles nurses will encounter throughout their role in professional nursing. As one grows with the profession, so does the individuals style of leading. Every situation a nurse encounters is different, preparing the nurse to be flexible and adaptive. Two leadership styles that stand out today in nursing are Transactional leadership and Transformational leadership. The two leadership styles will be discussed in how they pertain in professional nursing practice.
Transactional and Transformational Leadership
In today's humanity leadership methods, Transactional leadership and Transformational leadership are utilised in nursing on an every day basis. Transactional leadership has one significant role; organising by exception. Transformational leadership displays 3 characteristics; charisma, individualized concern, and thoughtful stimulation.
