FEEDBACK

Feedback in Students perspective

Concept of Feedback

Today without any shadow of doubt we can say feedback is the fundamental part of education and training programs. In the learning process, it helps the students to improve the capabilities. It raises the awareness in the students about their strengths and skills. On the contrary, it helps them to find out the weak areas and take appropriate ways to address them. Feedback is the continuous process in which the results of action-done are given back to the people by any authority. In the education perspective, when a student is doing any work e.g. assignment, paper, exercise etc. the teacher gives him some comments. These comments are identifying the weakness and the strengths of the students. It is always two-way flow process of communication which keeps the process of development in the student.

The feedback can be positive and negative for the student. It is mostly in the form of comments on the student's piece of work. However, the marks and grades also fall in the category of feedback. Today, all the higher education universities have integrated feedback in their teaching methodology. Some universities are paying special focus on the feedback system (Kember, 2002, pp. 411-425). The management advises the teachers to give regular feedback to the students as they know their standing in class and university. At the time of giving feedback, the teachers remain very careful. They systematically give comments to the students and compel them to do hard work. On the other hand, some teachers lack the expertise of giving feedback. They are technically weak and have less exposure of the academia.

Forms of Feedback

There are three well defined forms of feedback in the universities for the students.

Marks and Grades

In the universities, the most common form of giving feedback to the students is marks & grades. These marks are given on the basis of work which student had done. When a student gets good marks from the teacher, it is the feedback that (s) he has performed well. However, when the student gets poor marks, it is the signal that the performance is not good.

Written Comments

The second most common form of feedback is the written comments and remarks on the student's piece of work. Usually, these comments are neutral, positive and negative. The positive comments are encouraging the students and increase the level of confidence. In the academia, teachers are reluctant to give negative comments. These negative lines are helpful for the students and give them chance to improve themselves.

Verbal Appreciation

In the class room, the teachers are encouraging discussion. Some universities are separately reserving some percentage of marks for the participation of students in the class room. The appreciation is given to the students who are constructively participating. In this way, other students are also trying to participate in the class. This form of appreciation makes the environment more learning.
