Ethics and Law

In the late 20th century, it was seen that the American military institution adopted stringent equal employment opportunity and granted more employment opportunities to African-Americans than granted by any other institution or organization. As a result of which, African-Americans enrolled into the armed forces more than working for any other organization or firm. This is the context of what was said by General Colin Powell in the reply to Congress when accused of employing disproportionate number of African-Americans when compared to the number of civilian workforce serving in the Persian Gulf. Powell was emphasizing upon the point that Military has extended the employment opportunity towards the African-American community, women and minority groups and no other institution (Lundquist, 2008, pp. 486). Thus, although they may be disproportionate in comparison to the civilian workforce, when the private sector and other organizations start to provide the same opportunities, the impact of the opportunities provided by the Military institution could become clearer. Years have passed and even now, it is evident that the situation somehow, in some dimension, is nearly the same (Allen, Dawson, Wheatley and White, 2004, pp. 14). African-Americans are found to be underrepresented with 7% being enrolled as social workers out of the population having 12% as African-Americans (Bagshaw, 2004, pp. 155). Researches indicate that Prejudice is a common factor that leads to this discriminatory practice by employers (Employee Selection and Development, 2002).
