Hovensa is also called St.Croix Refinery which is a refinery of petroleum and is located on the St. Croix island in US in Virgin Island. This refinery is a joint venture between the Petroleos de Venezuela and Hess Corporation. It provided gasoline and heating oil for most of the operating life of the refinery to the Gulf Coast of US and the seaboard of eastern with some crude oil which is sourced mainly from the Venezuela. Before its crude stock was sourced from different number of countries other than US like Libya. At a capacity of about five hundred thousand barrels each day as at 2010 and it was among the top ten largest refineries in the whole world.
In Jan 1966 Hess Oil Virgin Island Corporation began the construction of its refinery and it had bought the property from the Annie de Chabert & in Oct of same year, and then the operations of refinery started. In 1974 the capacity of the refinery was expanded to its top level of six hundred and fifty thousand barrels each day. The operations of the refinery were taken over by Hovensa LLC in 1998.
In 2011 the company paid about USD 5.3 M charge for the violation of Clean Air Act. On 18th Jan 2012 the firm announced that the refinery was closed by the mid of Feb'12. The refinery will be served as storage terminal.
From 1992 to 1998 I have worked as a Process Control Operator (DCS). The Job responsibilities which I have carried out during this tenure was the successful operation process of the units by the utilization of DCS which means the Distribution Control System in order to achieve the targets of production and communicated the concerns of safety in order to achieve efficient, safe and optimal level of production.
I was working with a very proactive approach in avoiding the unit and it upsets the utilizing process by trending the tools and I was responsible for troubleshooting of that process too. I used to evaluate the data and operating the parameters to the optimal level in meeting the product specification by utilizing DMC with advance process controller.
