Educational Leadership is the official journal of the ASCD (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development), formed out of a merger in March 1943 of the Department of Supervision and Directors of Instruction of the National Education Association (NEA) and the Society for Curriculum Study to become the Department of Supervision and Curriculum Development of NEA, which changed its name to ASCD in 1946 and became an independent organization.
The content of the journal was targeted to the membership of this department: supervisors, school principals, professors of education, curriculum specialists, teachers, and superintendents of schools. The title for this journal, Educational Leadership, was chosen to appeal to those individuals who were visionary and who could energize their colleagues to move forward to tackle the problems inevitable in a changing educational world.
Educational Leadership began and continues as a theme journal, soliciting articles focusing on pertinent issues of the time and serves as a source of current information on new ideas, controversial issues, social concerns, and research-based programs for those professionals who continue to work in the educational world.

Educational leadership planning for professional development is a comprehensive and ongoing strategy used by school districts to support the growth and development of teachers and staff for the benefit of students, as well as for the educational institution. The common denominator for planning sound professional development is the belief that effective leadership is at the heart of every high- quality school. Effectual professional development provides a foundation of school-based and district goals to achieve student learning. Planning professional development is a collaborative venture that requires commitment from all parties involved.
The approach recommended is to determine drivers to leadership succession planning and explore potential barriers. The majority of money was being spent on occasional motivational speakers, one day workshops, and state and national conventions. The potential barriers that were examined were the lack of professional development policy in place to ensure the training modules met the district's mission, vision, and goals. Another consideration was the number of teachers who attended, versus those who opted not to participate (Bennett, 2003).
While the attempt to provide effective professional development is evident, poor planning and execution is also apparent in approaching training modules that support the school and ensure teacher participation. Specific planning may include avoidance of assuming teachers will participate and activities related to the school improvement plan or the vision of learning for the district.
