Overview of the subject

The topic is based on the Presidential Doctrine passed by the US President John F Kennedy. The doctrine passed by the US President was a vital element of the Foreign Policy and had the prime purpose to contain the spread of Communism in the Western Hemisphere. The doctrine also had its impact on the Vietnam War that started in 1962. The conflict in the Vietnam reflected the state of Cold War between USA and USSR. Therefore, this is the principal background because of which the Presidential Doctrine was passed by US President Kennedy.

Background of the relationship between Vietnam and USA

The military conflict took place between the US and Vietnam during the Cold War era from the time between 1955 and 1975. At that time, Vietnam consisted of two regions known as North Vietnam and South Vietnam. North Vietnam had support from the Communist countries such as China and USSR. On the other hand, South Vietnam had support from the anti-communist forces such as USA, Britain and Australia. The Presidential Doctrine was passed by considering these features in order to contain Communism in the Western Hemisphere. Although, the battle advanced in the coming years and it intensified during the US President Johnson's Administration. The US had an active involvement in the Vietnam War between the time of 1965 and 1969. However, when Richard Nixon got elected as the US President, he passed a Presidential Doctrine that reduced the direct involvement of US in the war, in the following years. The US continued supporting their ally in Vietnam before the war ended in 1975. Therefore, this is the overall background of the relationship between Vietnam and USA (Wheat, 2000).
