Law enforcement officials are individuals that are involved in activities with regards to taking care and providing protection to the general public through maintenance of law and order. It involves all the activities ranging from prevention, detection to investigation of crime so that the criminal could be caught or suspected individuals could be detained for further investigation.

Law enforcement officials feel de motivated and highly stressed due to problems that they face on everyday basis. Some of the major de motivating factors ranges from organizational demands to dealing with criminals and crime on daily basis. Organization demands refer to issues such as shift work, increased workload, demanding and challenging work while those purely related to the nature of police official's job that adds to the stress and problems exist in the form of violence and sufferings that are faced by them due to their interaction with criminals and crime scene investigations. Dealing with different types of crimes and violence is one of the major causes of de motivation and dissatisfaction in the field of law enforcement. Their job also invites lot of public and media attention which is mostly negative and frustrating as are result of community policing and lack of required resources. It has been suggested that the major stressor in the life of police officials is related to their job that is their responsibility to provide safe environment for the public. The fact that after small period of 20 weeks training, a person is expected to protect innocent people of the society which seems pretty easy but causes anxiety. Police official also feel de motivated when their expectation with regards to job are not met. For instance boredom factor arises due to monotonous work routine. Additionally disrespect from public due to some reason also acts a major de motivating factor. According to a research study around one third of the police officials never felt satisfied with their performance and work and is confused about their competency and skills which gives rise to negative feelings and emotions. They are also stressed and always fearing if they will be able to deal with the crime and act according to the laws and regulations.

Some of the major motivating factors for any police official are recognition and support from the superiors both in terms of their freedom and work related issues. Superiors may provide police officials with enough autonomy to make choices and decisions in their duty. It has been suggested that supervisors they provide for meaningful rationale to the officers and acknowledge their feelings, police officials are motivated and determined to work hard. Competence support from supervisor refers to providing the officers with guidelines with regards to his performance. Continuous communication and recognition from superiors also increases motivation and self esteem of the officers by reducing the negative challenging psychological effects of the job (Otis & Pelettier, 2005).
