Physical Goods theft is considered a crime for a long time; however, it has been relatively new concept of considering Intellectual property theft a crime. Intellectual property (IP) is actually a judicial concept in nature and refers to the creations of mind possessing exclusive legal rights which can be defended and challenged for ownership in court rooms. A variety of intangible assets come under this category of intellectual property. The literature and statistics found on intellectual property is increasing with the passage of time. In United Kingdom the actions are particularly gearing up at a very rapid pace.

A good source of information with regards to statistics in the realm of intellectual property and rights associated with it can be found in annual IP crime report, which is produced by the IP Crime Group (IPOa 2011). The group was founded in the year 2004 by the office of Intellectual property. The group compiles the findings and statistics from law enforcement agencies together, with the aim of collaborating across borders regarding IP crime. The group published the 2010/11 IP Crime Report on August 9th, 2011 and presented the threats to individuals and businesses by IP crime. This report also shows the success examples of those combating it.

The report includes the IP crime overview and link to organized criminality in IP realm. The report also provides the introduction to new initiatives and innovation to tackle IP crime. The work of European commission in this respect is highlighted. The National Fraud Authority 2011 report indicates that shows that total loss to the United Kingdom economy from fraud is £38 billion (Attorneygeneral.gov.uk, 2011). The report indicates that these frauds are increasingly having theft of intellectual property. The fast speed internet connections allow faster files download, which result in ease of these illegal activities. Also, the social websites, pop-up websites, and auction sites provide opportunity to sell fake goods.

The website of Intellectual property Office, UK has plenty of information paved in the forms of reports mentioning the extent of losses to economy because of intellectual property theft. The research on the website indicates that UK business invests more in intangible assets, and constitutes nearly half of investment in intangibles, valuing £65 billion was in IPRs in the year 2008 (IPO, 2011).

The IP crime Report 2010-2011 further indicates that there have been inconsistent data ion the impact and scale of IP crime over internet.
