Children and Young People Counsellor

For over a very long time, I have aspired to pursue a career in the field of counselling and to become a 'children and young people counsellor'. Currently enrolled for the degree of BA Honours in Early Childhood Studies, I plan to do my Masters in Children and Young People Counselling, afterwards. Moreover, with the intention of acquiring a better insight to the emotional and psychological concerns that children experience in their everyday lives, I plan to work as a volunteer, which would additionally help me in gaining practical work experience. All these factors combined, would ultimately lead to the acquisition of enhanced job prospects.

The exploration of effectiveness, significance and the benefits of having a counsellor in every society has lead to its heightened scope in the current job market. It is anticipated that, by the year 2030, the employment of counsellors in various organizational departments would rise by 25%. This remarkable pace and rate of expansion of this field is considered to represent the most significant development as compared to all other professions. However, it has been recognized that the strongest of these demands has been observed specifically for those counsellors who deal with children and young people belonging to a diverse variety of cultural, social and economic backgrounds (Prospects, 2013).

Owing to the increasing complexity of everyday life, a dramatic increase in the ratio and intensity of various routine problems has been observed which has lead to the development of stress particularly in young people and small children. According to Snyder, in the years to come, the function of counselling would hold immense importance in every aspect of human functioning. He believes that, children and young people will soon need facilitation in as simple tasks as making decisions regarding their own lives.
