Describe the challenges currently faced by leaders of criminal justice organizations.

Introduction

Criminal justice organizations comprise of courts, police and corrections. These are more commonly known as jails or prisons. All of these organizations face a number of similar as well as distinct challenges. The leaders are often the hub of all power, administration and management. Thus, the leaders face the most of the challenges continuously.

Moreover, the growing law and order issues, terrorism and other such problems have caused the challenges to mount like never before. The problems are now havoc and need to be solved on an immediate basis. As the environment is changing and challenging, the police or law enforcement agencies need to balance predictability and constancy with change and adaptation (Batts et al, 2012). The burden of change and adaptability entirely lies on leaders. They have to cope up with many challenges and have to adapt to certain changes in a way that the organization remains efficient.

Challenges faced by criminal justice organizations

With the increase of terrorism, crimes, misuse of drugs and rape cases; there are several challenges faced by criminal justice organizations. Coping with the challenges needs much dedication from the leaders of the organizations. For coping up with the challenges, the organizations depend on committed, well trained, qualified and ethical professionals. The leaders are the guarantor of civil liberties and constitutional privileges of the individuals. Following is a brief account of the significant challenges faced by the leaders of criminal justice organizations

Legal Challenges

Criminal justice organizations have to deal with the political and legal pressures, that arise from within the organization as well as from outside the organization. Police officers, corrections and courts are affected by changes in the law and constitution. Police have to ensure the enforcement of laws, whereas courts have to ensure the maintenance of legal rights of individuals. Enforcing any legal change is the foremost duty of an officer and it offers a series of new challenges to deal with.

Political Challenges

Politics plays an important role in the criminal justice organizations (Dunphy, 2008). Most of the state judges and prosecutors are elected to their respective offices. The political concerns and pressure groups can lead to several changes to the top of any organization. In such case, the organization and the leaders need to be ready to encounter any situation arising due to the sudden changes in leadership. Moreover, the leaders of such organizations have to stay well informed of the changing laws and be fully aware of any political alliance.

Power and Conflict
