Diathesis-Stress Model

According to the biological and behavioral studies, it can be stated that the stress deteriorates the symptoms and the model of diathesis is related to the keen response to the stressors. The neural mechanism can be understood by the augmenting effect of the axis of HPA on the synthesis of dopamine and its receptors. In the condition of diathesis for the problem of schizophrenia, the abnormality can be seen in the receptors of dopamine. It can also be suggested that the axis of HPA works as a potentiating system because it produces effects on the dopamine. Similarly, the damage to hippocampus and abnormality in the receptors of dopamine can cause the patient to become hypersensitive to stress. The neural diathesis-stress model is dependent on the results of the prenatal factors and the abnormalities of the brain in Schizophrenia. It provides a foundation for the explanation of the key features of the course of development and the clinical presentation (Walker, 1997).
