Introduction

Statistics is a subject that allows the user to make predictions of economic or sociological nature from the exclusive application of probabilistic reasoning to data sets goals. From the beginning of the 21st century, the subject of Statistics has expanded into a full-fledged and a well-developed scientific discipline. It may be defined as a science that carries with it an application and a construction of the theoretical-mathematical framework which performs an assessment of the numerical data for obtaining valid knowledge.

Ethics in Statistics

Statisticians handle data that are of great value and importance and therefore, must have a work ethic. There are various ethics that the people working in the field of statistics need to undertake. Statisticians must ensure that their actions are constant with the interests of these groups and they do not favor any group at the expense of another. They should have respect for privacy and confidentiality agreements, must be honest and responsible with the information collected and to comply with their ethical principles. Moreover, the statisticians should search the objectivity, avoid default result, safeguard insider, and respond in the integrity of the discipline (Goodyear, Crego, & Johnston, 1992). Thus, it is a fundamental topic for professional performance and adds a dimension to think about the performance and statistical ethics.

While philosophers have developed approaches to ethical analysis, one can approach the problem from a more practical point of view, considering defining the notion of ethics as a set of rules compiled in a guide or professional standards that may be important in education and training of statisticians. For example, the goal of the Ethical Guidelines of the American Statistical Association (1999) states: The purpose of the ASA ethical guidelines is to ensure that statistical work is ethical and effective in work environment and assist students learn to develop statistical work reasonably. On the other hand, performance of a professional ethical statistical may not be restricted only to meet these guidelines or standards. It is important to note the statement by the Statistical Commission of the General Assembly of the United Nations, on the celebration of World Statistics Day 2010, which was in recognition of services provided by the global statistical system at national and international level (Hoaglin, Mosteller, Tukey, 1985). In this respect the statistical ethics was defined within the keywords: Service, Professionalism, and Integrity.

The function of statistics is executed within the society, and this execution leads to different ethical issues to which biblical norms of love, justice, truth, honesty and authority should apply. The profession involving statistics is definitely familiar with the problems of ethics and a proper stand is being taken for maintaining the professional integrity in the field of statistics.
