Task one

Business world is changing at the rapid pace so are the need and wants of the customers as well as employees working internally. Therefore, it has become one of the biggest challenges for the managers to keep employees motivated so as to meet the company's goal and customer expectations (Deshon and Gillespie, 2005). Hence, it can only be possible once the internal employees are motivated enough to work in particular workplace environment. Moreover, another need which has raised the issue of motivating employees is population ageing in the times when there is labour shortage with mobile workforce. Therefore, managers need to think of the big challenge and have to empower and motivate employees so as to retain and attract them for performance enhancement. Every individual working in an organization has different set of needs, background, characteristics, hence need to be carried accordingly. Therefore, manger of the supermarket needed to consider the core theories related to the motivation of the employees at workplace which will ultimately result in the job satisfaction and increased performance.

Process theories of motivation

Employee motivation can bring positivity to the overall organization. Motivation improves productivity, quality and services. Achievement of goals, gaining an optimistic perspective, creating power to change, building self-esteem and managing their personal development is introduced through motivation. All the process theories surround around the concept that how and why the employees shape their thought process when choosing particular action over other (George et al., 2002). These theories focus on the cognitive perspective of the employees regarding their behaviour. Hence process theories could be very useful for any organization including supermarkets when it comes to motivating employees with diverse cultural background. Yet, the outcomes of implementing theories may vary substantially across different cultural setting. The two important theories which can be implemented in Supermarket are:

Equity theory

Expectancy theory

Motivating employees is one of the most key tasks of successful management. The successful management should know: how to motivate employees to use all their talents and abilities and not just do your job, what encouragement to use and how to remove the employee from his stagnant. These factors include some of the needs of any job: adequate salary, working conditions, and job security and performance benefits. Herzberg said those things were necessary, even before the workers began to be motivated and concluded that there are ten maintenance factors, as follows: the policy and company management; the survival technique; interpersonal relations with supervisor; interpersonal relationships with peers; interpersonal relationships with subordination; salary; safety in the workplace; life; working conditions and position.

Equity Theory

This theory is usually associated with the phenomenon of social comparison, and is tagged to JS Adams. Most of the time people working in the same set of workplace environment usually gauge the fairness of work by comparing with others.
