Events between US and South Vietnam after Cold War
The following events took place after the end of Cold War. At the Geneva Conference in 1954, elections were supposed to be held in 1956 in Vietnam. However, the country was declared independent after which opposition started. Soon after that guerilla war started and Diem was assassinated in 1963. Soon after that, involvement of US combats began, and Vietnam War was the greatest tragedy of the Cold War. In order to win the Vietnamese war, air strikes were ordered on Cambodia by Nixon. Moreover, the Americans also started to withdraw from the country. Cambodia was badly damaged; therefore, peasants began to revolt. Khmer Rouger took power in 1975, and he was one of the cruelest men in power in the history. Therefore, the American mistakes related to the Vietnam War continued to escalate (LaFeber, 2000).
Moreover, an invasion was also promoted by the US by the South Vietnamese troops. The aim of this invasion was to close the Ho Chi Minh Trail. However, in 1972 a deal was signed for peace. This deal was finalized between Henry Kissinger, the American Secretary of State, and Le Duc Tho, the North Vietnamese representative. Despite of this, Vietnamese did not agree to the terms because of which the fight continued.
Current Relationship between US and Vietnam
US and Vietnam has diplomatic relationship, and both provide a great example of partnership in the 21st century together. They both are very cooperative, and US is committed to strength its ties with Vietnam. Vietnam was played a major role in the involvement in multilateral institutions in the Asia-Pacific area, like ASEAN and APEC. US also helped Vietnam and supported it to become a more open economy. ...
