Introduction

The purpose of this research paper is to discuss Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) specifically in the Military. The immediate aftermath and remote traumatic brain injuries are often the result of damage caused to the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord injury). They incurred in the future victims and their families and their social and financial cost is high. Cerebral edema is a common complication of traumatic brain injury excluding concussions. These brain lesions cause neurological deficits localizing signs such as decreased muscle strength or sensitivity of a limb, asymmetric deep tendon reflexes, Babinski sign, aphasia, etc. A traumatic brain injury can damage parts of the brain that help a person to think and remember, causing cognitive impairment. The front part of the brain is usually injured during a traumatic brain injury; this is the part of the brain used for thinking and remembering. Cognitive disorders are common after TBI. A TBI can cause many types of cognitive problems (Christine, pp. 2091).

Traumatic brain injuries can be very serious and often come with long-term complications. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC, each year about 1.7 million people in the United States suffer a traumatic brain injury. It is important to recognize the signs of a possible traumatic brain injury and get treatment for the condition (Patricia, pp. 8). Falls are a leading cause of traumatic brain injuries, so it is vital to take precautions to avoid especially for the elderly and children. Installing handrails and non-slip mats in the bathroom, security doors at the top of the stairs and lower window guards are all good ways to prevent these injuries.

Brain injury and their effects remain one of the most difficult and unresolved problems of modern medicine, and are of great importance because of the prevalence and serious health and social consequences. Traumatic brain injury is caused by the transmitted forces to the brain as a result of an impact to the head. Traumatic brain injury may be inconsequential and completely is absorbed through the natural healing process, or it can be severe and accompanied by permanent damage to varying degrees. A traumatic brain injury, often referred to as TBI, is a type of acquired brain injury as a result of a sudden trauma causes brain damage. In military TBI damage can involve several factors, such as tearing of the cell structures, damage to areas of brain cells, the penetration of tissues and blood vessels or bleeding, swelling or blood clots in the brain (Cernak, pp.255).
