Children learn at school about famous Americans as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr., who struggled to make this country of freedom, opportunity and equality for all. They learn about famous documents like the Declaration of Independence, which declares that "all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

The main theme of "The Lesson" as the most important lesson of life is not always learned in the classroom. Bambara presents this subject with the help of these three characters especially Sylvia. Sylvia found out how it should have pride in which she is, and succeed by being herself, not pretending that someone else. This "lesson", that Ms. Moore was trying to reach children.
The main topic was the history of creating awareness among young people about what life has to offer. The nature of man taking the realities of life to such an extent that apathy and lethargy sets in, that is destructive to the social structure of the modern world. In this stalemate, Ms. Moore delivers the momentum required for people to realize their God-given right to something better. We are told that Ms. Moore graduated, well-dressed, in most cases, and has a good command of their language. She seems to be a man who saw the world. She has survived life, and wants to use this experience in providing children with an opportunity to expand their horizons. This is a chance that it strives to ensure that opens our eyes to the true nature of life and not giving them money and bombard their psyche with moralistic attitude.
History demonstrates a lack of commitment culture. He leads us through the perspective of children who think only about entertainment, and through the mind within the adults who resigned his life of mediocrity.
