The Role of Communication in Successful Organization

Introduction

People work in teams inside an organization at many levels. The coordination of these teams is of premier concern. Communication is the process that ensures timely transfer of ideas, opinions and happenings. Communication is the interchanging or imparting of thoughts, information, or opinions by signs, speech, or writing; a message or document imparting views, news, and information; a sending of messages and orders; activity by one that changes the behavior of another (Webster's).

Communication can be considered lifeblood of an organization due to several reasons. For one thing, people in an organization spend over 75% of their time in interpersonal situation (Kilbride, 2010). Poor communication can sprout roots of misunderstandings and ultimately conflicts. Therefore, effective communication in an organization is of premier importance. The success is brought through many ways using effective communication. The company must transfer its vision and mission down to every single employee in the organization. Greater compliance to the policies and procedures, and following Standard operating procedures are always a dream of an organization, which comes true when using effective communication. When the effective communication takes place, there is little room for misunderstandings, and hence, less conflicts arising out of them. So in multiple ways, effective communication fosters success of an organization.

Effective Communication is Critical

Dreaming of making a world class organization will remain a dream forever, if the element of effective communication is not added. Organizations have teams, and these teams need to coordinate with each other to create synergy in an organization. The communication at different levels of organization takes different forms. However, one thing stays the same; it makes the receiver understand the message in the same way as the sender wanted to.

Managers should know how to create an atmosphere to teach the staff ways of effectively communicating, using a communication plan and communicate with others effectively. Communication in an organization is basically similar to that of personal communication. Communication is a basic human activity that enables us to connect with each other in a social setting (Pihulyk, and Audrey, 2003). Successful businesses have good external, organizational, and interpersonal levels of communication. Each of these levels has its demands and format. Understanding them and making others in the organization understand it, is the key to successful communication.

Effective Communication

It is better to assess the effectiveness of communication in an organization by a manager. Knowing that, whether the communication is effective or not has some measures. The simple way to measure the affectivity of communicator is to measure how well the listener is heard. This means that how the person is listening, understanding, responding and acting within the desires time frame (Shetcliffe, and John, 2004).
