CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Background

Firms in free-market economies are always on the lookout for ways to increase sales, improve productivity and increase profitability. Firms often turn to technology in order to achieve these goals. Many firms have recently turned to management information systems (MIS) to improve productivity. MIS systems promise large return on investment through the integration of data and processes across the entire value chain, increasing the availability of information, improving the speed of decision making, and reducing costs. To achieve these goals the MIS must replace all business systems and take complete control over business processes. In their rush to attain this holy grail of information technology, executives may not fully understand the massive changes in structure and processes that MIS systems force on the organization. Because organizational culture is interdependent with the structure and processes of the organization, these massive changes may also have a significant unintended impact on the culture of the organization. These unintended cultural impacts may have significant and long-lasting impacts on the performance of the organization. It is the purpose of this dissertation to empirically study the impact that MIS systems have on organizational culture in the small and medium enterprises (Bartunek 1987 483).

Problem Statement

Many small organizations are implementing MIS systems, with dramatic effect on the organization, without formal evaluation methods or full knowledge of what changes will be wrought by the system. Because of the pervasive impact of culture on organizations, the effect that MIS system implementation has on culture is a key area of study that has not been explored in the literature.

Significance

This research is very important as it will fill out the gaps in the existing literature.

Aims and objectives

The research aims to achieve the following objective

The definition and literature related to organizational culture

The culture of SMEs

The factors which affect the MIS implementation in the SMEs

The impact of technology on the small and medium enterprise culture

Research question

The research aims to answer the following questions

What is the culture of SMEs?

What are the factors which affect the MIS implementation in the SMEs?

What is the impact of technology on the small and medium enterprise culture?

What is the impact of organization culture in the implementation of MIS in the SMEs?

CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEW

This chapter will review the dual concepts of organizational climate and organizational culture and summarize the evolution of the literature toward the conclusion that they are the same concept viewed from different perspectives and research approaches (Denison, 1996, 617). Organizational culture operates at multiple levels, with some levels more susceptible to change than others. Firms usually have multiple cultures, given that unique cultures can also form within sub-groupings in the organization (Schein, 1992, 153). Although initially formed by the founder ...
