Complementary and alternative therapies (CAT) encompass a diversity of health care systems, practices and products not prescribed by physicians practicing allopathic Western medicine and not taught in Western medical schools. Application of CAT remedies is known as 'complementary mode use' when it is adjunct to allopathic medicine and as 'alternative mode' when used instead of allopathic treatments.
