Perception of Self in REM sleep

Introduction

REM sleep plays a role in the transfer to the neocortex and enhancing long-term labile reactivated memory traces within the hippocampus, parahippocampus and amygdala during REM sleep. Transcription of genes involved in synaptic changes occur also associated during REM sleep. There is a positive correlation between the total duration of REM sleep, and 1. the immature brain at birth, and 2. the total sleep time. In addition to its involvement in synaptic plasticity related to memory, REM sleep may be involved in the recovery of oxidative processes, brain maturation in children with the total amount of REM sleep decreases with age, and the renewed increase progressive body temperature and brain. The time spent in REM sleep increased from 50% in infants to 25% in small children.

Researchers at Harvard led by Dr. Robert Stickgold have recently submitted undergraduates at various aptitude tests, leaving them to sleep before the test again. [ref. necessary] Result: those who have reached REM sleep performed better on tests of pattern recognition (such as grammar), those who slept deeply without reaching REM sleep proved best in memory. This stage is also called REM sleep (from the English. Rapid eye movements, which means rapid eye movements). As we may have guessed, for the REM sleep is characterized by the accelerated movement of the eyeballs under the closed eyelids - this is the first fundamental difference of slow wave sleep.

Discussion

The second difference is that in REM sleep the brain is not resting on the contrary, is activated. Also increases the heart rate, but the large muscles are completely relaxed. And most interesting is that REM sleep to wake people the hardest, although his condition is closest to the waking state. Therefore, REM sleep is also called paradoxical. It is not clear assignment of REM sleep. There are several assumptions in this regard: A. In the stage of REM sleep the brain lays on the shelves this information. Two. The brain analyzes the environmental conditions in which the body and works out to be an adaptation strategy (Hobson, 1988). An indirect confirmation of this judgment is the fact that neonates REM sleep constitutes 50% of adults - 20-25% in the elderly - 15%.

But there is one fact which does not cause controversy - in a fast dream come to us the most vivid dreams! In other parts of the dreams are also present, but they are blurred and we are very bad to remember. Scientists also claim that the dream is well remembered by we, unless we wake up in REM sleep. Dream begins with the 1st phase, which lasts about 10 minutes. Then the series are the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th phase. Then, in reverse order - 3rd, 2nd, and the phase of REM sleep (Kryger, Roth & Dement, 2005). Together they form a cycle that repeats itself 4-5 times a night. This changes the duration of different phases from cycle to ...
