Introduction

The term “SEO” (search engine optimization) came into wide circulation in 1997-1998 and is often attributed to Danny Sullivan, who was then working with his site Search Engine Watch. Although he claims that just he does not know who coined this term. The books leading up to this subject include “placement in search engines”, “search rankings”, “search engine positioning” and “search engine optimization”, the latter belongs to Jim Rhodes (Rhodes), the author of a series of tips, “The Art of SEO”. Their predecessors, such as Jim Heath, who wrote an article entitled “Guidance as to create business websites that work”, had no formal definition for search engine optimization. The directory predates the search engines from 1992 when there were about 150 listed web sites. AltaVista and Yahoo were among the first search engines. It is from 1999 that Google arrived and it became one of the fastest to view the responses to queries made by the user which was perfectly suited for dial-up Internet connections at that time and since then Google has retained its place as a leader.

Optimization for search engines (SEO) is a real challenge on several levels:

The objective of the work of site optimization for search engines is a first step; define the terms / queries that users are likely to take to reach the site. These keywords will be selected according to the company's business and as a function of potential traffic. If a keyword is too specific, it will not bring enough traffic and if it is too generic, it will bring a large volume of unqualified traffic.

Because of this enormous traffic potential, webmasters started looking for every way to top the list, even if they had to “cheat”. It was noted at one time using techniques designed to fool the search engine robots to make up the site. The engines have responded by modifying their ranking algorithms to penalize or blacklist rogue sites.

The purpose of a search engine is to provide the most relevant request to the user, the ranking algorithms of the engines are constantly modified to move in the direction that matches the user queries.

The answer that Google gives regularly to all webmasters who want to know techniques to optimize their sites is that they should think about designing a site enjoyable and relevant to the user rather than trying to create a site for their robot indexing (crawler). Even if there are practices to avoid penalizing the ranking of a site, the best way to get a site ranked is to ensure that it offers a real plus for the user.

Optimization for search engines is a difficult area to quantify in terms of results: indeed, the ranking of algorithms change constantly.
