Summary

The article, that we have chosen for review is an experimental research that examines the development and validation of the attitudes of the Sadomasochism Scale. This exploratory research exhibits the method involving the control or manipulation of conditions for the purpose of studying the relative effects of various treatments applied to the members of two discrete samples. The research is conducted, composed and written by Megan R. Yost (Department of Psychology, Dickinson College) the research article, published in Journal of Sex research in 2010.

Experiment

This research article is based on the observation of Attitudes about Sadomasochism Scale. Throughout the research the term is used as ASMS. The primary objective of this research was to expand the boundaries of knowledge by exploring some relevant and factual content regarding the attitudes and feelings of individuals who are involved in contemporary sexual practices, referred as “consensual sexual sadomasochism (SM)”. This occurs whenever someone receives sexual pleasure from either receiving pain (masochism) or inflicting it on other people (sadism). The pain may be of either a mental or physical nature. Typically, at least two participants engage in this behavior. It is always consensual. Often, individuals who engage in this behavior will have a safe word that is used whenever one of the actors feels that the activity is getting out of hand. Both straight and gay sex discovered the sexual potential of all body regions and integrated deviant techniques (e.g., oral sex, sadomasochism, or fetishism; Shorter presents convincing statistics into the mainstream of sexual behavior.

The experiment was done to test the hypothesis whether Attitudes about Sadomasochism Scale (Violence, Socially Wrong, Real Life and Lack of Tolerance) does have any relationship with other measures of sexual and social conservatism. It includes (attitudes about Lesbian and Gays, sexual conservatism, right-wing authoritarianism, and rape myth acceptance). For this purpose, two discrete samples were tested, with two different groups of participants. The results of the experiment showed that there is a positive relationship between the Attitudes about Sadomasochism Scale (Violence, Socially Wrong, Real Life and Lack of Tolerance) with other measures of sexual and social conservatism. It includes (attitudes about Lesbian and Gays, sexual conservatism, right-wing authoritarianism, and rape myth acceptance). Moreover, it was observed that most of the variation in the results not influenced by the four measures discussed above. It observed that participants who had previous knowledge about the pros and cons of sadomasochism, participants who had previously experienced SM, and participants who have a relative or friend engaged in SM all hold positive feelings and attitudes about the sadomasochism.

For the first sample, the researcher has selected 213 students, mostly undergraduate. Out of two hundred and thirteen students, one hundred and fifty participants were women, and sixty three participants were men.
